What is Ultherapy & How does Ultherapy Work?
Ultherapy significantly lifts and tightens face and neck skin using ultrasound technology to visualize & tighten the same subcutaneous fibro-muscular foundational layers of the face and neck tissues that are addressed during a surgical lift. No other non-surgical, non-invasive skin tightening technology can target this deeper foundational layer. Usually, only one or two treatments are required. Length of treatment time varies from 30-120 minutes depending upon the number of areas / zones treated. After Ultherapy, lifting and tightening occurs gradually over 3-6 months and Ultherapy improvements appear to last up to two years or more, as aging is a progressive, on-going process. Ultherapy treatments at our Las Vegas facility are performed by our trained, certified, experienced Ultherapy technicians under the supervision of award winning cosmetic dermatologic surgeon, Dr. Robert Strimling, MD.
By crossing or focusing ultrasound waves at selected depths, Ultherapy delivers precise, desired focal heat energy at the various different foundational layers, including not only the fibro-muscular fascia, but also the subcutaneous and deep layers of the skin, as desired; without causing damage to the outer layers of skin.
Ultherapy delivered heat energy causes some immediate collagen contraction and also, naturally stimulates new / more youthful, rejuvenated and stronger collagen and elastin; gradually tightening and lifting the treated areas over 3-6 months. Expect a more open look to your eyes, a more defined jaw-line and/or a more youthful, sleeker looking neck after Ultherapy.
How is Ultherapy different from other skin tightening procedures?
How does Ultherapy compare to other radiofrequency-based skin tightening therapies? Ultherapy is the only non-surgical cosmetic procedure that uses focused ultrasound technology and has the ability to effectively target the foundational facial and neck tissue layers addressed in a surgical facelift. Only Ultherapy has an FDA indication for face / neck “lifting”. In contrast, other skin tightening devices use radio frequency or infrared energy. Monopolar radiofrequency (RF) employed by Exilis and Thermage cannot achieve the same depth of penetration nor focal energy deliverance and thus, are not as powerful nor as effective. Bipolar RF and Infrared energy-based devices (such as SkinTyte, Titan or Refirme and the many others) are similarly not as effective as either Ultherapy nor monopolar RF devices like Exilis or Thermage. Ultherapy is the best skin / tissue tightening (& lifting) technology bar none. In our opinion, monopolar RF energy-based Exilis is the second best. However, Exilis also requires multiple treatment sessions. Combining Ultherapy lifting with RF skin tightening may be synergistic.
Is Ultherapy Safe?
Ultrasound energy, as in Ultherapy, has a proven safe track record, being used in medical imaging for over 50 years. Also, the Ultherapy procedure has been cleared by the FDA as effective and safe. Hundreds of thousands of patients have now been treated worldwide with Ultherapy without significant adverse events.
Who is a good candidate for Ultherapy skin lifting / tightening?
Although a broad range of candidates can benefit from Ultherapy, the best candidates are in their 30’s – 60’s with mild to moderate laxity. Ultherapy is not a replacement for surgery; yet, Ultherapy may be an option for those who do not want a surgical face or neck lift, but desire some lifting or tightening in order to look more refreshed and toned. Younger Ultherapy candidates in their 20’s who want to delay the effects of aging or those who desire to prolong the effects of previous cosmetic surgery are also potential Ultherapy candidates.
Those desiring improvement of crepey chest skin or other areas are also candidates.
What happens during Ultherapy in treatments?
Before photos are taken, you are positioned and your skin is cleansed. Then, our Ultherapy practitioner uses Ultherapy’s ultrasound imaging to see below the surface of the skin and plan the optimal placement of the Ultherapy ultrasound energy. Next, focused ultrasound energy is delivered to the targeted layers until all of the zones are completely treated per protocol.
What does Ultherapy feel like? Does Ultherapy hurt?
2g Ultherapy (aka Ultherapy Amplify) incorporates upgraded software that results in a more comfortable treatment than earlier Ultherapy versions. While comfort thresholds vary from patient to patient, most patients now report that Ultherapy Amplify is quite tolerable. If and when any discomfort does occur, it happens while Ultherapy energy is being delivered. This sensation is brief, temporary and is a positive signal that the collagen-building process has begun. We employ measures to make the experience as pleasant as possible, and most patients tell us that they leave comfortable and excited about the Ultherapy benefits to come.
What happens after an Ultherapy treatment?
You may return to normal activities immediately after Ultherapy. Any visible flushing or redness after Ultherapy should resolve within a few hours. You may experience slight swelling for a few days after Ultherapy, or mild tingling / tenderness to the touch for a few days to weeks after Ultherapy. Other occasional temporary post Ultherapy effects can include bruising or welts, which resolve within a few days, or more rarely, numbness in a select area, which may take up to several weeks to resolve. Some patients notice immediate tightening after Ultherapy. What kind of results can I expect after Ultherapy?
The Ultherapy lifting/tightening treatment initiates the regenerative process, but the full Ultherapy effect will build gradually over two to four months and many continue improving from Ultherapy beyond that. Visible cosmetic improvements include lifting and toning of sagging skin. In the FDA-reviewed clinical trials, patients had a noticeable and significant lifting of the brow and chin / cheek tissues. Occasionally, results are subclinical; that is, the collagen building occuring on the inside that helps counter the effects of gravity does not have a significant or visible effect on the outside. An additional Ultherapy treatment is usually recommended.
How long does an Ultherapy Lift last?
Patients treated with Ultherapy still have new, fresh young collagen after a year’s time following the Ultherapy procedure, however your skin continues to age. Future touch-ups with Ultherapy or less aggressive modalities, like Exilis or SkinTyte and/or adjunct fillers and Botox/Dysport together with Ultherapy can help keep pace with the aging process, which varies by individual. Various clinical factors can also affect Ultherapy response and duration, including degree of skin quality and laxity, subcutaneous fat volume, and age and lifestyle/health factors among others.
Contraindications to Ultherapy include active open facial wounds or lesions, including severe cystic acne, until relatively clear or healed.
