Skin cancer is the most prevalent of all types of cancers.
More than one million Americans develop skin cancer every year. Fair skin/genetic predisposition and excessive sun exposure are common risk factors, among others.
Actinic (solar) keratoses (aka AK’s, pre-cancers) are small, dry/scaly, white, red or brown spots that are the earliest stage in the development of skin cancer. They are readily treatable via a variety of methods, including destruction by freezing with liquid nitrogen (cryosurgery) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) with Levulan.

Treatment requires complete eradication or removal. Options include:
- Imiquimod cream (Aldara or Zyclara)
- Destructive methods
- Cryosurgery
- Electrosurgery
- LASER
- Radiation therapy

Prognosis is dependent upon many variables, but is usually excellent if caught early and treated. Because studies show a 40% risk of developing a new, different skin cancer(s) within 2-5 years, lifelong periodic follow-up exams are advised.
What is Mohs Skin Cancer Surgery?
Mohs micrographic surgery (aka Mohs surgery or Mohs skin cancer surgery) is a specialized procedure used to completely remove the entire cancer while at the same time sparing as much normal skin as possible. Mohs surgery has the highest cure rate for skin cancer (i.e. > 99%).

Skin Cancer Prevention and Early Detection
Practice sun avoidance or protection with a sun protective factor (SPF) of 30 or greater sunscreen. SPF is a measure of a sunscreen’s ability to protect your skin from damage that is caused by exposure to ultraviolet B (UVB) wavelength light, such as from the sun and tanning beds. Chronic UVB wavelength light skin exposure promotes skin aging changes and skin cancer. SPF ranges from 1 to 100; the higher the SPF, the better the protection.
How is SPF determined?
SPF is determined experimentally indoors by exposing people to simulated noontime sunlight until redness (sunburn) develops. Some people wear sunscreen and others do not. The amount of light that causes redness in sunscreen-protected skin, divided by the amount that causes redness in unprotected skin is the SPF.
Monitor your skin monthly for new, changing, non-healing or symptomatic skin growths / lesions, which might be the start of skin cancer. Don’t delay in seeking our evaluation for any such worrisome discovery. And visit us for a complete skin exam at least yearly or as otherwise recommended by your dermatology or other provider, based upon your individual risk factors.
