What are Kybella Chin/Neck Fat Injections?
Kybella chin/neck fat injections are available in Las Vegas by our Kybella-trained and board-certified dermatologist, Robert Strimling, MD. Our Dr. Strimling was one of the first cosmetic dermatologic surgeons in the country to use Kybella.
Kybella (deoxycholic acid, formally known as ATX-101) is an FDA approved non-surgical injectable treatment solution for reducing moderate to severe upper neck/under chin (submental) fat, otherwise known as a “double chin”. (Kybella submental fat injections were FDA approved in April, 2015.) However, Kybella may also be used almost anywhere that excess fat is undesired.
Submental fullness (“double chin”) is a common yet undertreated aesthetic facial condition that can impact a broad range of adults, including both women and men. Causes include aging, genetics and weight gain. Sometimes, no matter how much you diet or exercise, the condition may not go away, and can make you look older and heavier than you are. If you are bothered by submental fullness, you’re not alone. According to a 2015 survey, 67% of people are bothered by submental fullness.
What is Kybella?
Kybella is a non-human, non-animal formulation of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring substance in our bodies that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat.
How does Kybella Work?
When injected into fatty tissues, Kybella causes the destruction of fat cells. Because Kybella preferentially targets fat cells, surrounding non-fatty tissues are largely unaffected. Kybella results are long-lasting. Kybella does not affect loose, sagging skin or underlying muscle bands that may also be contributing to the aging neck. However, adjunct Ultherapy neck lifting or Exilis Ultra radiofrequency skin tightening can improve these contributing, unwanted signs of aging.
How is Kybella Administered?
Kybella is administered via a series of injections into the under chin fat at each 15 to 20 minute treatment session. Usually two (2), but possibly, one(1) to four (4) vials of Kybella per treatment session times two (2) to four (4) bimonthly treatment sessions is recommended for successful, satisfactory results. About 80% of patients treated with Kybella report satisfaction with their results.
For most patients, downtime is minimal and improves after each treatment. Side effects include, but are not limited to: injection site swelling (edema/induration), bruising (hematoma), pain, numbness and redness (erythema). Any side effects are temporary, usually lasting only few days.
Contraindications to Kybella include active infection at the injection site, pregnancy and nursing. To minimize bruising, avoid aspirin and aspirin-containing products for at least one week prior Kybella injections. Also, avoid ibuprofen and similar anti-inflammatory medications for 3 days prior to Kybella. Avoid other blood thinners per your prescribing physician’s recommendation. Otherwise, no special pre-injection preparation is necessary. Ice packs and ibuprofen may be used after injections as needed.
