What is Juvederm (and its family of products)?
The Juvederm family, Restylane family, and Belotero are a group of similar prescription hyaluronic acid-based injectables used to fill unwanted wrinkles and lines or augment/enhance areas that may need plumping (e.g. scars, lips or cheeks).
Juvederm Ultra/Ultra Plus contains 24 mg/ml of 9–11% cross-linked hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a natural, organic, clear gel-like sugar protein complex that is also found in collagen and dermal skin.
The Juvederm family of products includes:
- Juvederm Ultra (9% cross-linked HA) & Juvederm Ultra XC
- Juvederm Ultra Plus (11% cross-linked HA) & Juvederm Ultra Plus XC
- Juvederm Voluma XC
- Juvederm Volbella XC

(XC products contain the local anesthetic lidocaine for pain mitigation.)
Static wrinkles/lines (wrinkles that are visible at rest, and unrelated to underlying facial muscle action) are ideal for wrinkle fillers like Juvederm, while dynamic wrinkles/lines (wrinkles visible during muscle action) are generally better treated with Botox or Dysport.
Juvederm (and its family of products) Indications:
Juvederm is used for a variety of cosmetic concerns, but is most commonly performed to eliminate or reduce static facial wrinkles/lines and augment/enhance facial structures. Juvederm injections are among our most requested and satisfying cosmetic services. Juvederm treatments are generally safe, effective, non-surgical and painless/minimally painful, without any significant downtime.
We use proven safe, gentle and easy anesthetic options for your added comfort, including prescription topical anesthetics and injectable local anesthetic.
What should I expect from a Juvederm Treatment?
Looking younger and less wrinkled begins immediately. However, any swelling & bruising that may occur masks final results until gone. To minimize bruising and swelling, avoid aspirin & aspirin containing products for at least one week prior Juvederm injections (if possible) and avoid ibuprofen (i.e. Advil and Motrin) for 3 days prior Juvederm injections. Avoid other blood thinners per your prescribing physician’s recommendation.
Also, to prepare for your Juvederm treatment, avoid makeup or remove it before your treatment. After treatment, avoid makeup until the following day.
One or more sessions may be needed. Results last from 6 months to 2 years, sometimes longer.
You should not have Juvederm if you are allergic to hyaluronic acid fillers, gram negative bacterial proteins or lidocaine or have an infection at the injection sites.
Aftercare for Juvederm (and other fillers):
- Apply cold compresses 5-15 minutes per hour for comfort / swelling / bruising if needed.
- Topical and or oral homeopathic OTC Arnica may help reduce any bruising if needed.
